Polymer bottles themselves cost more but COST FAR LESS TO PACKAGE, and so the costs shift from the packaging, which gets tossed, to far superior bottles, where it does you the most good! The total net cost of each system (bottle + D.O.T. packaging) is about the same, so this upgrade is truly a win-win for us and for our customers.
Ordinary HDPE is NOT DOT-approved
because it is unsuitable and unsafe for concentrated nitric acid. Common HDPE turns yellow, becomes brittle, and can leak or break without warning.
Some people assume glass must be okay because glass is used in every laboratory, but that’s a mistake. Lab glass is expensive
borosilicate
glass. Glass bottles are made from cheap
soda-lime
glass. You won’t find nitric acid sold in borosilicate glass bottles because it would be way too expensive, and no one would pay for it. Aside from the obvious dangers associated with glass, soda-lime glass also leaches heavy metals into nitric acid, and this will contaminate your process. There are scientific papers on this. You can look it up.

– Get medical attention immediately and flush eyes with plenty of water for 15 minutes.
Skin
– Flush skin with plenty of water for 15 minutes.
Inhalation
– Immediately move outside and get fresh air. Give oxygen if breathing is difficult. Sip water if able to swallow. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Do not induce vomiting unless advised by a poison control center or physician.
