Edible
is defined as suitable for CANNING folks, not just munching on it like wheat grass powder. Its extreme pH will cause damage to human skin cells and clothing. This makes it a powerful natural pesticide, but be sensible. Treat it like you would an acid, even though they are extreme opposites on the pH scale. Do not eat raw! Extreme pH at 12.4.
Calcium hydroxide, traditionally called slaked lime, is a compound with the chemical formula
Ca
(
OH
)
2
.
It is a white powder obtained when
calcium oxide
(called lime or quicklime) is mixed, or “
slaked,

with water
.
It has many names including: hydrated lime, builders lime, slack lime, cal, edible lime, and pickling
lime. It has a low toxicity and is useful for many applications, including food.
Calcium hydroxide is an alkaline powder used for a multitude of
purposes.
Although called
“edible,” it is
not
ever eaten
by itself
. It is traditionally used in native cultures with various plants and
herbs, including
rustica
tobacco,
coca
leaves,
gambir
, and betel nut (
areca catechu
) to increase the
absorption of their alkaloids into the bloodstream via the mucous membranes.
Edible lime was also traditionally used in processing
corn
by American natives as a way
to increase the absorption of niacin, a valuable B vitamin. Additionally, edible lime is used in
the pickling and processing of other food and beverage products. Due to its super
alkaline
properties, it is also used to balance out acidic soil and can be used
similarly in mycology when added to substrates or when added to aquarium tanks.
Hydrated lime is a dry powder obtained by treating quicklime
with sufficient water to satisfy its chemical affinity for water, thereby
hydrating the oxides into hydroxides. Hydrated lime, though only slightly soluble in water, forms
suspensions easily; the resulting solution and suspension is strongly alkaline,
possessing a pH of 12.4.
Used as
:
A
Calcium supplement in food and vitamins

.
Entheogenic catalyst
in
Yopo

leaves, and when chewing “betel nut.” It increases the availability of naturally-occurring alkaloids in certain plants.
In Afghanistan, slaked lime is added to tobacco and wood ash to make
naswar
.

cal
and has been added to corn for centuries; it increases the B vitamin absorbability.
Added to acid soils in
agriculture
and gardening to balance the pH or create alkaline soil.
Treating foxing in books.
I discovered accidentally that it is quite effective at cleaning tarnish off of old silverware. However, do not mix with aluminum!
